When is the due date to file Form 8868?

Generally, the deadline to file Form 8868 will be the same as the deadline for the form you wish to extend.

For example, to request an extension for 990 series forms, the deadline to file Form 8868 is the 15th day of the 5th month after the accounting period ends

  • If the organization follows a calendar tax year, the deadline is May 15.
  • If the organization follows the fiscal year, then the deadline will change with respect to the date when the organization’s tax period ends. For example, if the organization’s accounting period ends in July, the deadline is December 15th.

If this deadline falls on a weekend or federal holiday, then the due date falls on the next business day. The same will apply to the due date of their extension Form 8868.
