How to e-file Form 199N (California e-Postcard) with the FTB?

Follow these steps to file Form 199N (California e-Postcard) through the FTB's e-Postcard filing system:

Before You Start Filing Form 199N

  • Ensure that you have your Entity ID or California Corporation Number readily available.
     
  • Collect essential information regarding your organization, including its legal name, address, tax year, and principal officer details.
     
  • You are allotted 20 minutes to complete each page. If your session times out, you will need to restart the process.
     
  • After successfully submitting the form, a confirmation number will be issued. Please retain this number as proof of submission.
     
  • For optimal security, log out and close your browser after submitting the form to protect your personal and organizational information.

Step 1: Go to the FTB Filing Portal

Visit the official California FTB e-Postcard filing site: https://webapp.ftb.ca.gov/epostcard

You’ll be directed to a secure, browser-based filing system where you can submit your 199N online without needing to log into a user account.

Step 2: Enter Your Entity ID

You’ll be prompted to enter one of the following:

  • California Corporation Number
  • Entity ID number

This is usually a 7-, 11-, or 12-digit number found on correspondence from the FTB or on the Secretary of State’s website.

Step 3: Verify Your Entity Name

Once you enter your number and proceed:

  • The system will pull up your entity’s legal name as registered with the state.
  • Confirm that this name matches your nonprofit or exempt entity.

If it’s incorrect or doesn’t appear, check your number or contact the FTB for help.

Step 4: Enter Account Period Information

Now, you’ll be asked to provide your accounting period information:

  • Start date and end date of your organization's tax year 
  • Certain information regarding the accounting period and gross receipts.

This should match your IRS or FTB-approved tax year.

Step 5: Enter Entity Details and Principal Officer Information

You'll need to provide or verify:

  • Entity name
  • Principal officer’s full name and title
    (e.g., President, Treasurer, Executive Director)
  • Principal officer’s address (can be same as the entity’s address).

Step 6: Enter Contact Information

Provide contact details for the FTB so that they can follow up:

  • Name of the contact person
  • Phone number

Ensure that this information is current, as the FTB will use it to contact you regarding any filing issues or inquiries.

Step 7: Review All Entered Information

Before submitting:

  • Carefully review each section for typos or incorrect details and edit them if required.
  • Confirm gross receipts are $50,000 or less to remain eligible for Form 199N.

You won’t be able to amend the form once filed through this system.

Once done, click Submit to file your Form 199N.
