Have questions? We've got you covered!Name control and EIN don't match with the IRS records [R0000-922-01] - How do I resolve it?
IRS Error Code: [R0000-922-01]
Rejection Message:
The EIN and name control provided must match the IRS records. If your organization recently changed its name or address, please check the "Name Change" or "Name or Address Change" box on the form.
What does it mean:
The name control of your business and the EIN doesn't match with the ones on the IRS records. Name Control is a four-character identifier derived from the organization's name. For instance, for an organization named "Ashton Foundation," the name control would be "ASHT." This is assigned by the IRS when the organization requests an Employer Identification Number (EIN).
In this case, these are two likely mistakes that would have led to the rejection of your return.
a. Incorrect EIN (or)
b. Mistyped the organization name
Either mistake or both will cause a mismatch in the name control.
Action Required:
- Verify the organization’s name and Employer Identification Number (EIN) against the IRS determination letter.
- Check whether the organization has recently changed its name.
- If a name change has occurred, ensure it is indicated by selecting the Name Change checkbox on the return.
Here's how you correct the mismatch in Name Control:
- From the home page, select the organization and the tax year.
- You need to click on the 'Rejected by the IRS' button to find the list of errors for the rejected return. Then, click the 'Fix Me' button to resolve the rejection error.
