1. Is it mandatory to fill out schedules when filing Form 990?

It is entirely based on the field information you provided in the 990 forms. Just the necessary 990 schedules will be enabled in accordance with IRS regulations and guidelines. It is not required to complete all of the schedules. Tax990 helps out by adding schedules based on the requirement.


2. Can I save my return and come back later to complete my form?

There’s no need to save your return as the information will be automatically saved while you fill the return so you can continue from where you left off.

On the Home page, select the tax year and the organization name for which you’re filing the return and click the Continue Filing button to continue with the filing process.

3. Can I switch the filing method from form-based to interview-based or vice-versa mid-way?

Yes. You can switch your filing method from form to interview-based or vice-versa in your filing process mid-way by clicking on the SWITCH TO option from the Dashboard >> 990 Series button of your Tax 990 account. No values will be copied while switching the filing type.

You cannot switch the filing type once the return gets paid.

Note: You can switch your filing method only for the Forms 990-PF, 990-EZ and Form 990. 

4. How do I access my returns previously filed using your service?

From the homepage, navigate to My Account>> Filing History. Select the organization, tax year, and return status. You can view the forms you filed with Tax 990 for the current and two prior tax years and their return status.

You can also click the Show filing history link in the Home page to view the In-progress and transmitted form for a particular organization.


5. I don’t have an EFIN? Can I e-file my Form 990 return?

Yes. You only need an EIN to e-file your 990 return to the IRS. Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a unique 9-digit number provided to an organization so that the IRS identifies the organization based on it.

If you do not have an EIN for your organization, you must request one by filing Form SS-4, Application for Employer Identification Number (EIN).

6. I have a paper copy of my 990 return. Can I upload the form and e-file it?

Currently, we do not support this option. You have to create a new return in Tax990 and e-file with the IRS. If you choose to e-file your return using Tax990, we do internal audit checks before transmitting your return to the IRS.


7. I paper-filed my original return with the IRS. Can I file an amendment return here?

If the IRS accepted the original return you mailed, you could file an amendment return with us. Make sure you check the Amended Return checkbox while filling out the return.


  1. If you filed your original return with another service provider, you could only file an amended return with us using our form-based filing method. We do not support the interview-based filing method for amended returns filed with other service providers.
  2. If you filed your original return with us, you could file an amended return using either form-based or interview-based filing methods.

8. Can I review the form before transmitting it to the IRS?

Yes, you can review your 990 forms before transmitting it to the IRS. You can also download a draft version of the form from the Dashboard under the Documents field of your Tax 990 account. You can also use Manage Reviewer and Approver portal to send the draft form for review.

9. How do I download my 990 return?

You can download the In-progress, transmitted, accepted, and rejected IRS forms from the dashboard. Select the required Organization Name and Tax Year. Under the Documents field, you have the option to download the 990 forms.

10. I don’t remember my account password. What should I do?

On the Sign-in page, click the Forgot Password link. Enter your registered email address and click Submit. You will receive an email with instructions to reset your password. Sometimes, you will receive an email in your spam folder.

You can also change your password from My Account >> Change Password option.

You can also login via your Google account, if you signed up with your google account.

11. How do I know my return is accepted by the IRS?

You will receive an email from us once your return gets accepted by the IRS. You can also know the status of your return from the Dashboard or the 990 Tax Returns tab of your Tax 990 account.

12. My organization is under group exemption, but I can’t remember the GEN number. What should I do?

You can contact your parent/central organization and get the details of your Group Exemption Number (GEN).

13. I transmitted my federal return to the IRS using your service. Can I file CA Form 199 now?

Yes, Tax990 allows you to file CA Form 199 before or after the IRS accepts the original form. You can use the Copy Return feature to copy the original form information to reflect in CA Form 199.

14. Can I fill out the 8868 extension form before the tax year closes?

No. Form 8868 can only be filed after the completion of your organization’s accounting period.

15. How will I know the status of my return?

Once the IRS accepts or rejects your return, you'll get an email notification from us. Within 24-48 hours of transmission, you can check your return's status on your Tax990 account Dashboard. Please note that it might take a few more hours to accept/reject the return during the tax season


16. How do I delete my current return?

On the Dashboard, select the tax year and the organization for which you’re filing the return and click Delete the Return under the Action Column.

If payment is made, you must contact our support or email [email protected] with a request to delete the return.

17. Can I import the information I filled for the federal return into my state return?

Currently, we do not support the import option. Instead, you have to create a new return for your state filing and e-file with us. However, If you have filed the federal return with us, we will copy the data from Federal to state.

18. Where do I fill out the tax preparer's information?

The tax preparer’s information must be filled out in the Signature Block of your 990 return. You can also provide the Tax Professionals information in My Accounts >> User Profile.

19. Where can the invited user review my form?

Once you share the return to the user, they will get an invite email along with the login credentials for the Reviewers & Approvers portal, which they can use to review your organization’s return.

20. Does a tax preparer with a PTIN need an ERO number to e-file Form 990 return?

No. If your tax preparer has a PTIN number, there's no need for them to have an ERO number. They can e-file the return with their PTIN number.

21. I have some Schedule PDFs that need to be attached with my return. Can I upload them?

Currently, we do not support this option. However, based on the information you provide in the return, we will automatically generate the required schedules. Therefore, you can provide the necessary information quickly and e-file your return.

22. What forms does Tax990 support?

Tax 990 supports the following forms.

  1. Form 990-PF, Return of Private Foundation
  2. Form 990-N (e-Postcard)
  3. Form 990-EZ, Short Form Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax
  4. Form 990, Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax
  5. Form 8868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File an Exempt Organization Return

23. I'm about to pay for my return. Will there be a receipt after I complete my payment?

Yes. Once you complete the payment, your receipt will be available on the Dashboard under the Documents section. You can also find the receipt from the My Account >> Order History page. You have the option to download your receipt.

24. Do you support Form 990-T?

Yes. We do support Form 990-T for the 2021 and 2022 tax years.

25. How much will it cost to file a 990 with you?

The pricing for Form 990 is $199.90 per return, and the schedules are auto-generated for free!

26. Will I be able to download a draft copy for management review before I e-file with the IRS?

Yes. A draft copy of the form will be available to download from the Dashboard of your account. To download the form without watermarks, you must complete the payment.

27. Where can I find the payment receipt?

You can find your payment receipt on the Dashboard of your Tax 990 account or from the My Account >> Order History page.

28. How do I correct and retransmit a return that the IRS rejected?

In the Dashboard, click Rejected by the IRS. A popup appears stating the reason why your form got rejected. Now, click the Fix Error button, follow the steps as prompted to fix the errors, and retransmit your return to the IRS.

29. Does your software support state filing?

Currently, we only support the California state form, CA Form 199. You can file CA Form 199 with us, but IRS has to accept your federal return first.

However, we provide information on your state filing requirements, such as the registrations and reinstatement, forms to file, and their due date.

30. How do I file 990-N for a prior year?

From the Dashboard, under the Start New Return section, select the previous tax year for which you want to file the 990-N return. Now click the Start Now button on the Form 990-N (e-Postcard) section.

31. Where can I download the IRS acceptance letter of my 990 return?

Once your return gets accepted by the IRS, you will receive an email along with the IRS acceptance letter. You can download it either from the email or the Dashboard of your Tax 990 account.

32. I have a completed 990 return on my computer. Can I scan and upload it to your software for e-file?

Currently, we do not support this option. Instead, you can create a new form in Tax990 and e-file it with us. If you choose to e-file your return with us, we do internal audit checks to transmit your return to the IRS error-free.

33. When I complete the payment, will my return gets automatically transmitted to the IRS?

No. The payment you made is only for the service provided by us. You have to manually transmit the return by clicking the Transmit to the IRS button.

34. How can I print a copy of the return before filing?

Currently, we do support the print option. However, you can download a copy of the return from the Dashboard and print it.

35. I shared my 2021 return with a board member for review. Will the 2022 return be automatically shared?

No. you need to add a user manually and share the current year’s return with them for review.

36. I completed my 990 return. How do I share it with an officer to sign before transmitting it to the IRS?

Here, you have two options.

  1. You can share the return manually to the officer after completing the payment or,
  2. You can invite the officer to review and sign the return using the Manage Reviewers and Approvers feature.

37. Where can I find my IRS submission ID for the return I filed with the IRS?

Once your return gets accepted by the IRS, you can find your IRS submission ID on the Tax Returns page of your Tax 990 account.

38. When I pay my Tax 990 e-filing fee, does it include the tax amount I owe to the IRS?

No. The payment you make is only for the service we provide. You can pay your tax due amount using the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) or Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW).

39. How do I sign a form that I’m going to submit electronically?

As a Business Owner, you need to enter the 5-digit PIN as your electronic signature. After that, you’ll be able to transmit your signed form directly to the IRS. If you are a tax professional, use 8453-TE to sign the tax form.

40. I filed my 2021 return by mail. Can I upload my current year’s return and e-file with your software?

Currently, we do not support this option. To e-file with us, you’ll need to create a new return. If you choose to e-file your return with us, we offer internal audit checks to help you transmit your return to the IRS error-free!

41. Is there an option to attach my foundation’s contribution information when I e-file Form 990-PF?

We offer a bulk upload option so you can upload your foundation’s contribution details when you e-file Form 990-PF. However, the bulk upload feature is only available when you choose our interview-style filing option.

42. Can I edit my return after completing the payment?

Yes, you can edit your return even after making your payment. However, once you transmit your form to the IRS, you won't be able to make any more changes.

43. How are schedules enabled in interview-based filing?

Based on the information you provide on your return, we will enable the required schedules and prompt you to provide the correct information.

For example, Schedule B will be enabled if you have entered more than $5,000 in the contribution section of your 990-PF.

44. Can I file my prior year 990 return with you?

Yes, Tax 990 supports the e-filing of 990 returns for the current tax year and two prior years.

For example, if your current tax year is 2022, Tax 990 only allows prior-year filings for the 2021 and 2020 tax years.

45. Is it mandatory to file Schedule O with Form 990?

Yes, you should always complete Schedule O, whether you are filing Form 990 or Form 990-EZ.

If you file a 990 return without Schedule O, the IRS will consider your return incomplete.

46. How can I find my organization's tax year?

The beginning year of the tax period will be considered your organization's tax year.

  • If your organization follows a Calendar Tax Year, the tax period will be 12 consecutive months, from January to December. 
  • If your organization follows a Fiscal Tax Year, the tax period is 12 consecutive months, starting any month.

You can also find your organization's tax year on your application for federal tax-exempt status (Forms 1023, 1023-EZ, 1024, or 1024 A) or on the determination letter you received approving your tax-exempt status.

47. My organization has zero unrelated business income tax. Do I need to file Form 990-T?

No, if you have zero unrelated business income tax to report, you are not required to file Form 990-T

48. Can I retransmit my rejected return for FREE with Tax 990?

Yes. If you e-filed your original return with Tax990, and if the IRS rejected it, you can correct the return and retransmit it for FREE.

49. How can I complete my schedules in Form-based and Interview-based filing?

Tax 990 supports all the schedules for Form 990. However, how you complete your schedules will differ depending on the filing method you choose.

  • Form-based filing - If you choose the form-based filing method, we will automatically enable the required schedules based on the information you provide on your return. For example, the schedules will be enabled based on the questions in Part IV of Form 990 and Part V of Form 990-EZ.
  • Interview-based filing - With the interview-based method, you will be asked a series of questions that will populate your return. Based on your responses, you will be asked questions regarding the necessary schedules to complete.

50. How long can a return take to get accepted/rejected by the IRS?

Generally, the IRS takes 24 to 48 hours to accept/reject your return. Also, when you file your nonprofit tax return on the deadline date or a date close to it, there might be a slight delay in the processing time.

We will notify you regarding the status of your return as soon as we receive an update from the IRS.

51. Is it mandatory for organizations to list their primary activities and program services on 990/990-EZ?

Yes. The organization must list at least one of their primary activity purposes and program services while filling out their Form 990/990-EZ return.

52. Can I e-file 990 for organization with short tax year, an exempt application pending, or a name change?

Yes. You can e-file your 990 return if your organization has a short tax year, an exempt application is pending, or the organization's name has changed.

However, if any of the following events occurred while filing the return for the tax year 2019, it is mandatory to paper-file the return and send it to the below-mentioned address.

53. I need to close my Tax 990 account. What should I do?

If you want to close your account and remove all your information, contact our support team at [email protected]. They will process your request and remove your account from Tax 990.

54. What information must I provide for creating a CPA account with Tax 990?

Please provide the following information while creating a CPA account with Tax 990.

If you own or work for a Firm

  • Details of the firm you own or work for; including name and address of the firm
  • Basic details such as your name, EIN, Preparer tax identification number (PTIN) (If you don't have PTIN, provide your SSN)

If you are self-employed

  • Details such as your name, EIN, Preparer tax identification number (PTIN) (If you don't have PTIN, provide your SSN), and address.

55. Can I revert the information that has been entered while switching between the filing types?

Currently, we do not support this option. Instead, you can either delete your current return and start over or use the switch button in the Dashboard to change your filing method.

Note - We do not copy the information you entered while you make a switch in the filing method.

56. Can I e-file Form 990-T for the 2019 tax year?

No. The IRS does not allow e-filing of Form 990-T for the tax year 2019.

However, you can paper-file the return and mail it to the below-mentioned address.

57. Where can I find my previously accepted returns?

In the Dashboard, click My Accounts. Under the Filing History, you can find your previously accepted returns (current and two prior tax years) and their return status.

58. When can the Approver or Reviewer review my form in the portal?

Once the payment is completed for the return, you can add a user, and you can now share the form for review and approval. Once you get the approval, transmit the form to the IRS.

59. What forms do Tax 990 support in Form 990-T?

Tax 990 supports the following Form 990-T forms.

  • Form 8949, Sales and other Dispositions of Capital Assets
  • Form 1041 Schedule I, Alternative Minimum Tax - Estates and Trusts
  • Form  4797, Sales of Business Property
  • Form 4562, Depreciation and Amortization (Including Information on Listed Property)
  • Form 1120 Schedule D, Capital Gains and Losses
  • Form 8995,  Qualified Business Income Deduction Simplified Computation
  • Form 1041 Schedule D, Capital Gains and Losses

60. Do I need to create a new business when my return gets rejected by the IRS?

No. You don't need to create a new business every time your return gets rejected by the IRS.

If your return got rejected by the IRS, Tax 990 would help you make corrections and retransmit your return for FREE.

61. Can I bulk upload my entries in the contribution and list of officers section?

Yes. Tax 990 supports a Bulk Upload feature that allows you to upload your contributions and list of officers' details in Bulk. 

You can perform the Bulk upload process in 3 simple steps.

  1. Download our Excel Template and save it to your computer.
  2. Enter all the required information in the excel template. Avoid renaming the sheet name and follow the tips given in the template.
  3. Upload the updated template from your computer.

62. What type of organization is required to add contributors' names and addresses in Schedule B?

Organizations described under Section 501(c)(3) and Section 527 are required to report the names and addresses of their contributors on Schedule B.

63. Why my EIN doesn't show up in your application?

This may be due to the following reasons.

The IRS public registry may not be updated if your organization is new and has recently filed Form 1023 or Form 1024.


As we only update our DB at specific intervals, your EIN information may not yet be updated in our system.

64. Is my e-sign needed while filing the return with the IRS?

If you are filing as a Business Owner (BO), you must enter a 5-digit PIN as your electronic signature and transmit your return to the IRS.

Suppose you are filing form 8453-TE or 8453-EO as a Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) on behalf of a business organization; you must download the completed form, get an e-sign from the organization and then upload and transmit it to the IRS. 

65. Which sections does Tax990 support bulk upload?

66. Is it possible to change the account type from BO(Business Owner) to CPA (Tax Profession)?

Yes, changing the account type from Business Owner to Tax Professional is possible. But it cannot be changed from your end. Request an email to our support team, [email protected] to assist with this.

67. What is meant by fiscal tax year and calendar tax year?

A calendar year always begins on New Year’s Day and ends on the last day of the month (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31). A fiscal year can start on any day and end precisely 365 days later except Dec 31.

68. How to recall the form just transmitted?

Once you’ve transmitted your 990 forms to the IRS, you cannot edit/recall the forms. If you have mistakenly reported incorrect information, you can file an amended return once the IRS accepts your original return.

69. How to edit the PDF copies in Tax990?

In Tax990, you cannot edit information in downloaded PDF copies.

  • To edit any information in a draft PDF copy, you need to make the modification in the returns and then download the draft form again.
  • When dealing with PDFs of forms that have already been transmitted, making any modifications directly to the PDF is not feasible.

70. How to confirm the tax period?

If you are unsure what to mention as tax period, you can find the tax year information from your previous filing or the IRS determination letter

The IRS determination letter informs a nonprofit organization that its request for federal tax exemption under Section 501(c)(3) has been granted.

71. Can I file form 8868 again for the same tax year?

No, you cannot file the extension form 8868 again in the same tax year.

73. How do I pay for your services?

74. Do we support the RRF-1 Annual Registration form?

Currently, we do not support the RRF-1 Annual Registration form in Tax990.
