1. Is it mandatory to fill out schedules when filing Form 990?

It is entirely based on the field information you provided in the 990 forms. Just the necessary 990 schedules will be enabled in accordance with IRS regulations and guidelines. It is not required to complete all of the schedules. Tax990 helps out by adding schedules based on the requirement.

 

2. Where can the invited user review my form?

Once you share the return to the user, they will get an invite email along with the login credentials for the Reviewers & Approvers portal, which they can use to review your organization’s return.

3. I have some Schedule PDFs that need to be attached with my return. Can I upload them?

Currently, we do not support this option. However, based on the information you provide in the return, we will automatically generate the required schedules. Therefore, you can provide the necessary information quickly and e-file your return.

4. I shared my 2021 return with a board member for review. Will the 2022 return be automatically shared?

No. you need to add a user manually and share the current year’s return with them for review.

5. Where can I find my IRS submission ID for the return I filed with the IRS?

Once your return gets accepted by the IRS, you can find your IRS submission ID on the Tax Returns page of your Tax 990 account.

6. How are schedules enabled in interview-based filing?

Based on the information you provide on your return, we will enable the required schedules and prompt you to provide the correct information.

For example, Schedule B will be enabled if you have entered more than $5,000 in the contribution section of your 990-PF.

7. Is it mandatory to file Schedule O with Form 990?

Yes, you should always complete Schedule O, whether you are filing Form 990 or Form 990-EZ.

If you file a 990 return without Schedule O, the IRS will consider your return incomplete.

8. How can I find my organization's tax year?

The beginning year of the tax period will be considered your organization's tax year.

  • If your organization follows a Calendar Tax Year, the tax period will be 12 consecutive months, from January to December. 
  • If your organization follows a Fiscal Tax Year, the tax period is 12 consecutive months, starting any month.

You can also find your organization's tax year on your application for federal tax-exempt status (Forms 1023, 1023-EZ, 1024, or 1024 A) or on the determination letter you received approving your tax-exempt status.

9. How can I complete my schedules in Form-based and Interview-based filing?

Tax 990 supports all the schedules for Form 990. However, how you complete your schedules will differ depending on the filing method you choose.

  • Form-based filing - If you choose the form-based filing method, we will automatically enable the required schedules based on the information you provide on your return. For example, the schedules will be enabled based on the questions in Part IV of Form 990 and Part V of Form 990-EZ.
  • Interview-based filing - With the interview-based method, you will be asked a series of questions that will populate your return. Based on your responses, you will be asked questions regarding the necessary schedules to complete.

10. How long can a return take to get accepted/rejected by the IRS?

Generally, the IRS takes 24 to 48 hours to accept/reject your return. Also, when you file your nonprofit tax return on the deadline date or a date close to it, there might be a slight delay in the processing time.

We will notify you regarding the status of your return as soon as we receive an update from the IRS.

11. Can I e-file Form 990-T for the 2019 tax year?

No. The IRS does not allow e-filing of Form 990-T for the tax year 2019.

However, you can paper-file the return and mail it to the below-mentioned address.

12. When can the Approver or Reviewer review my form in the portal?

Once the payment is completed for the return, you can add a user, and you can now share the form for review and approval. Once you get the approval, transmit the form to the IRS.
 

13. What type of organization is required to add contributors' names and addresses in Schedule B?

Organizations described under Section 501(c)(3) and Section 527 are required to report the names and addresses of their contributors on Schedule B.

14. What is meant by fiscal tax year and calendar tax year?

A calendar year always begins on New Year’s Day and ends on the last day of the month (Jan. 1 to Dec. 31). A fiscal year can start on any day and end precisely 365 days later except Dec 31.
