Can I file Form 990 twice for the same tax year?
The IRS keeps a record of every organization’s filed returns. If a return for the current tax year has already been submitted, it is considered official and on file. Once it’s on file:
- The IRS does not accept another filing for the same return.
- Any attempt to submit the same return again will be rejected.
This ensures that your organization’s tax information is accurate and avoids confusion from duplicate filings.
If you notice errors or need to update information on the filed return. You cannot resubmit the same return. Instead, the IRS allows you to file an amended return, which updates or corrects the original filing. The IRS will process the amended return and will become the official record for that tax year.
Note:
- Filing an amended return is the official method for making changes to a previously filed return. Once processed, the amended return becomes the final and official record for that tax year.
- This process prevents duplicate filings and ensures your organization stays compliant with IRS rules.
- Amended returns must be made available for public inspection for a period of three years.
