What happens if I miss a tax payment due date?
If you don’t pay your taxes by the due date, the IRS or your state tax agency may charge a penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid tax for each month (or part of a month) the payment is late, up to a maximum of 25%.
Even if you file for an extension to submit your return, you’re still required to pay any taxes owed by the original due date to avoid penalties and interest.
