I need to file a final return. What should I do?
If your organization is closing down, it is essential to file a final return with the IRS to formally conclude its operations and tax-exempt status.
On the IRS form you are submitting (e.g., Form 990, Form 990-EZ, or Form 990-N), you must indicate the return as final.
In Tax990, you can submit a final by following the steps below:
- On Form 990-EZ, check th box labeled ‘Final return/Termination’ on top of the form.
- On Form 990, check th box labeled ‘Final return/Terminated’ on top of the form.
- On Form 990-PF, check th box labeled ‘Final return/Terminated’ on top of the form.
- For Form 990-N, check the corresponding box to indicate that the return is the final return during the filing process.
Note: If you’ve opted for interview-style filing, the relevant checkbox will automatically be checked based on your response.
