IRS Error Code [F8868-053]:

Form 8868, Application for extension must be received on or before the due date of the return to which the extension is requested.

Rejection Message:

To get an extension to file Form 990 for your organization, you need to file Form 8868 after the end of the tax period but before the due date for submission of the 990 form. Otherwise, the IRS will reject your extension.

What does it mean:

For instance, if your organization is following a fiscal tax year from July 1st through June 30th, the due date to file your 990 form is mid-November. To apply for an extension to file the 990 form for your organization, you need to file form 8868 after June 30th and before Nov 15th of the year. If the extension is filed before June 30th or after November 15th, the IRS can reject the request for extension.

Resolution:

If the IRS rejects the extension form for filing before or on the end date of the tax period, you can retransmit the extension form after the end date of the tax period at no additional charges.
