Return Type and Version mismatch [R0000-004-01] - How do I resolve it?

IRS Error Code R0000-004-01

'ReturnTypeCd' (specified in the Return Header) and the return version (specified by the 'returnVersion' attribute of the 'Return' element) of the return must match the return type and the version supported by the Modernized e-File system.

What does it mean:

• You have filed a return for a tax year that isn’t eligible for e-filing.
• The IRS supports the e-filing of the Form 990 series only for the current and 2 prior years.

Resolution:

• If your exempt organization is required to file a nonprofit tax return for a tax year older than 3 years ago, it must be paper-filed.
