Why can’t I e-file Form 990-T and 1120-POL now?

Due to e-file system upgrades, the IRS has temporarily stopped accepting the e-filing of 990-T and 1120-POL forms until March 17, 2024. This means the organizations whose original and extended deadline falls between January 15, 2024, and March 17, 2024, for these forms will not be able to e-file their returns.

What should I do now?

For Form 990-T Filers:

  • If your organization’s original filing deadline for 990-T falls on January 15, February 15, or March 15, then you must request an extension using Form 8868. However, you cannot e-file 8868 until March 17, 2024, and you must file it on paper.
  • If your organization’s extended deadline for 990-T falls on those periods, you can e-file your form after March 17, 2024, and provide a reasonable cause to the IRS, which should state the filing was delayed due to the unavailability of the e-filing option.

For Form 1120-POL Filers:

  • If your organization’s deadline for 1120-POL falls on January 15, February 15, or March 15, you can file your 1120-POL on paper.
