Schedule D has to be attached with Form 990 only when the organization performs any of the following activity:

  1. Maintains a donor-advised fund(s) or accounts for which the donor has the right to provide advice on the distribution amounts in such funds or accounts
  2. Received or holds a conservation easement, including easements to preserve open space, the environment, historic land areas, or historic structures.
  3. Has certain investments or other assets that are 5% or more of its total assets
  4. Maintains collections of works of art, historical treasures, or other similar assets.
  5. Reported an escrow or custodial account liability on the base Form 990 balance sheet
  6. Provides debt counseling, debt management, credit repair, or debt negotiation services.
  7. Has endowments or quasi-endowments, whether directly held or held through a related organization.
  8. Has separate audited financial statements and separate or consolidated audited financial statements that include a footnote regarding uncertain tax positions.

The Schedule D will be generated automatically if required while filing your Form 990 using the "Interview-Based" filing in Tax990.

If your organization is required to report schedules other than A, B, and G, we recommend choosing our interview-based filing method.
